On 15th and 16th of December 2017, at the Administrative Court of Appeal in Tirana, the Centre organized the final around of the Moot Court – Albania IV. This annual event was carried out by the European Centre in collaboration with the Civil Rights Defenders. The first two rounds of the mock trial consisted of the presentation and selection of written arguments by the 10 participating public and private universities. The universities that participated in this round were:
-University “Aleksandër Xhuvani” Elbasan
-University of New York, Tirana
-University “Aleksandër Moisiu” Durrës
-University “Ismail Qemali” Vlorë
-University of Tirana
-University Europian of Tirana
-“Luarasi” University
-College University “Beder”
-University “Luigj Gurakuqi” Shkodër
-Mediterranean University of Albania
Six of these universities were able to move on into the semi-final round, and were then divided into two random groups as representatives of the state and representatives of the plaintiff. The six schools that participated in the semi-final trial were:
-University of Tirana
-University of New York Tirana
-University “Aleksandër Xhuvani” Elbasan
-University “Ismail Qemali” Vlorë
-Universiy“Luigj Gurakuqi” Shkodër
-College University “Beder”
The University of Vlora and the University of Tirana were able to move onto the final round, each representing the “plaintiff” and the “State” respectively.
The final round was executed on the 16th of December. The judicial body consisted of:
Mr. Ledi Bianku – Judge at the European Court of Human Rights, elected by the Albanian Republic
Ms. Arta Mandro – Pedagogue at the Albanian School of Magistrates
Mr. Xhezair Zaganjori – President of the Supreme Court of Albania
Mr. Florjan Kalaja – Judge, Consultant of the President of the Supreme Court
Ms Idlir Peçi – Expert on Human Rights
Ms. Migena Leskoviku – Pedagogue at the University of Tirana
After both teams extensively presented their arguments, the judicial body stepped back to evaluate the teams’ claims and their performances. The judges announced the Law Department of the University of Vlora as the winner of the final round of the Moot Court of the European Human Rights . This team represented Albania in the national competition, which was held on 19th– 21th of May in Skopje, Macedonia.
