Greece, 22 November 2021 – The fifth Training-of-Trainers on human rights and foreign prisoners took place in Greece. The General Secretariat for Crime Policy of the Greek Ministry of Citizens’ Protection informed all prison agencies of the B-COMPETENT project initiative to organize an online T-o-T workshop on the treatment and management of foreign prisoners. The Training of Trainers workshop, led via Zoom platform by Dr. Nikolaos Koulouris, Associate Professor, Department of Social Policy, Democritus University of Thrace who addresses the international standards, initiative, and fieldwork experiences related to the management and treatment of foreign nationals in prisons.
The seminar content was focused on Greek prison rules, European prison services initiatives, cooperation and practices, and Council of Europe standards and recommendations in dealing with foreign prisoners. The opening speeches were held by Ms. Violetta Georgakopoulou, Department of Staff Disciplinary Control and Special Issues General Secretariat for Crime Policy, Ministry for Citizen’s Protection, Prof. Vassiliki Artinopoulou, Panteion University of Social and Political Sciences, Department of Sociology, Chair of the Central Scientific Council for Prisons and Ms. Klara Kodra, Project Manager, European Centre.
Forty-five (45) prison officers of various ranks and capacities (directors, heads of custodial and social work departments, sociologists, psychologists, administrative staff, front line custodial and perimeter security staff) from twenty-three (23) attended the online training, discussed the Greek legal context as regards foreign prisoners’ treatment and management, attended the expert’s presentations on the international context, selected European prison services practices to facilitate non-national prisoners’ treatment and the 2012 Recommendation of the Council of Europe concerning foreign prisoners. The seminar concluded with discussion, comments and suggestions of attendees regarding their professional work and training prospects.
